Happy Friday! Even though this was a short week of school, we were able to pack a great deal of learning into it. We have ended our money unit and began exploring the concept of multiplication. We will investigate equal groups and arrays as a way to deepen our understanding of multiplication before I begin assessing multiplication fluency. However, students are always invited to practice their computational fluency on Mangahigh.com or multiplication.com.
In reading we have begun studying the genre of Biographies. Please ask your child about some of the famous people they have been reading about.
Also this week, we finished our study of Martin Luther King Jr. by creating Nobel Peace Prizes that explained how MLK changed the world. All of the students did a fantastic job.
Looking forward into next week, I'd like to ask for each child to begin bringing in an empty cereal box, which we will be decorating and using on Valentine's Day. We will be exchanging Valentine's on this day. If you wish for your child to participate in the exchange, they must bring a Valentine for every child. We have 27 students. I will send a list of names next week.
Our Encore schedule for the week is: Mon.-Music; Tues.-PE; Wed.-Art; Thurs.-Library;
Fri.- Music.
Have a great weekend!

Time for kids
In time for kids it was telling us about MLK Jr's life and about people's heroes like Alica keys and Gabbie douglas . Also in a page it was talking about pandas like how there is no bamboo. Also it was talking about MLK Jr's statue.
Equal Groups
This week we learned about equal groups. For example take ten cut it in half and you have two fives.
Biographies By Zeke
This week we were reading about biographies.I read about Barack Obama and he was born on August 4 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Barack Obama was the first African American to become president. .He is pretty interesting. Mrs.Coen read us a book about Martin Luther King Jr. I liked that the most.Martin Luther King Jr. ended segregation so white people and black people can go to the same school and more.

Why you should play football By Jake
Football is a great exercise. You might burn about 1,666 calories during a 90 minute football game. In football the wide receiver runs the most. In football after the game you sweating so much.
Football is the best sport ever! It's really fun too! It's fun to get touchdowns because after you get it you feel really good. It's also fun to catch a pass. If you win a game you can do whatever movement you want. But if you don't win, you should still be a good sport.

Rise of the Guardians By Jake
Rise of the guardians is so awesome! If you ever see it you'll love it! It's really funny to! Do you know who Isla Fisher is? She's an actor in the movie. She plays tooth. I like Rise of the Guardians because it's an animated movie and I love animated movies. I also like the actors in the movie. In the movie this guy named pitch tries to take over so everyone will believe in him. Do you think the guardians will be able to stop pitch and his army? Find out when you watch Rise of the Guardians!

Happy Friday! We've had a great week in room 205. Thanks to everyone who brought in snacks this week! It is greatly appreciated.
This week you will see the return of the Power Drill for homework. There are a few multiplication problems on this week's drill. Your child may or may not need support with those problems. We have planned to begin our multiplication unit this coming Wednesday. It would be great support to look over those few multiplication problems with your child as they work on completing their homework. In addition to the multiplication, it would be a great reinforcement to work with your child on making change by counting up. Many of them are quiet adept at finding the change through subtraction, but I would really like them to become proficient with the skill of counting up. A sample problem could look like this:
"Abigail bought a popcorn for $1.63. She gave the cashier a $5.00 bill. How much change did she get back?"
The key is having your child use coins and dollars to count from $1.63 up to $5.00.
It has been too long since we have done a science experiment. I am still in need of 2-liter bottles for a follow-up science experiment. We have 3 right now; I only need 3 more!
I have sent two flyers home today. You will find them in your child's take home folder. One is an gold paper regarding the 16th Annual Park Hill PTA Mardi Gras Dinner Auction. The other, is a pink flyer sent home with the girls about the American Girl Book and Tea Party on February 2 from 3:30-4:30.
With February quickly approaching, I'd like to take the time to remind you of our Symphony Field Trip on Feb. 14th. This is a morning field trip and we will be back to school in time for our Valentine's Day assembly. More information about the field trip and Valentine's Day celebration will be posted later.
To wrap-it up, I'd like to remind you of Hawthorn Night at Mercury Gymnastics this Saturday. Also, there is no school Monday, January 21st in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. When we begin our week Tuesday it will be an A day: Music.
Have a peaceful weekend!
That's my money! By Zeke
This week we have been learning about money. We did adding & it was a little hard at first but now it is really easy. After everybody got the hang of that we started subtracting money. After she showed us it was a lot easier. There was a lot of adding & subtracting. You would have change that you would give. Also you would go to the kidney table & pick what you would like & you would add up what it costs then go do your station. Then you would do the story problem of the day.For all that work you owe me $5.00!

Because of winn-dixie
the book because of Winn-Dixie is better than the movie because of Winn-Dixie. The book is more scripted. It describes Winn-Dixie like he is all shaggy and brown and has bold spots. In the movie it dose not look like Winn-Dixie one bit only when he is smiling .
Also you can feel more how the charter is feeling like when Gloria dump said she lost her eye sight I felt sad but in the movie not so much.
Also it is very funny like when opal walked to the produce section BAM opal saw lots of veggies on the floor and the manager was waving his arms around.

Monday, January 14
Hello All! I hope everyone is feeling well. Today, we had our first day of 100% attendance since second semester began. Hopefully, everyone can continue to stay healthy.
This week we will continue to work on reading nonfiction and determining the main idea. Typically, this can be very difficult for 8/9 year olds, so we will be continually practicing through all subject areas.
Last week, in writing, we worked toward publishing our opinion writing on the blog. You can read a few published pieces below. Many students are still drafting their opinions and the blog will be updated as they finish. This is a great opportunity to integrate writing and digital citizenship. Feel free to provide positive feedback or counter arguments to students in the comment section at the bottom of the post.
In math we are spending a few weeks working in depth with money. The homework this week includes a simple counting money page for review. Ultimately our goal is for students to be able to make change by counting up from a total to $5.00. If you have time, I would appreciate your reinforcement of this skill at home.
In social studies, we are wrapping up our study of communities and will begin learning about the life of Martin Luther King Jr.
Finally, a quick reminder about our Encore schedule this week: Tuesday-Music, Wednesday-PE, Thursday-Art, Friday-Library.

why you should watch the movie Because of Winn Dixie By Jake Powell
because of Winn Dixie is peculiar,
Like when Miss Franny Block thinks Winn Dixie is a bear. Also when Winn Dixie smiles.
It's kind of depressing to,
Like when the preacher tells opal 10 things about her mother(Because opals mom left when she was 3) and the preacher says she couldn't stop drinking alcohol. Also when the pound tries to take Winn Dixie away.
It's shocking,
Because Winn Dixie has a pathological fear of thunderstorms-pathological means a fear you can't get talked out of. So in the end opal has a big party and during the party it starts to thunder and lightning. Opal and the preacher go looking for him but they can't find him. So they go back to the party and sing. Then they hear howling at the door. They open it and Winn Dixie is standing right there!
So that's why I think you should watch Because of Winn Dixie!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Were you happy to see school begin today?
This time of year I find myself humming a line from a popular Christmas song, "...and Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again!" Although I thoroughly enjoyed the extra time I was able to spend with my family, I was ready to get back to work.
The students shared about their memorable winter breaks and seemed excited to get started with 2013! We have a few new faces joining us this semester. Tomorrow we get a new student, Shirin. Shirin is a former Hawthorn Husky and I'm sure many will be glad to see her return. Also, I am glad to introduce you to Ms. Taylor Askin! Ms. Askin is a student at Northwest Missouri State University and will be completing her student teaching experience with us. I feel very lucky to have Ms. Askin with us this semester. We will be planning our lessons and co-teaching together. Your child will have access to two adults during their day. Ms. Askin is also very lucky to be placed with such respectful and responsible children. She will be with us until May.
Before I close, I want to extend my deep gratitude for the lovely Christmas gifts you gave me. I am so privileged to work with amazing kids and supportive families.
Happy 2013!
